Burmese and Tibetans remember Tiananmen
June 4 is being commemorated internationally by many members of civil society as a metaphor of dissent which is fast growing, and also to protest China's growing financial and political influence which is endangering people's freedom and democracy especially in Asia.
Here in New Delhi the capital city of India, the Burma Centre Delhi (BCD), Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC), Regional Tibetan Women's Association (RTWA), Friends of Tibet (FOT), Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) and Human Rights Law Networks (HRLN) jointly commemorate the 20 anniversary of democracy movement in China also known as the “Tiananmen Square”.
It is 20 years since the military regime in Beijing rolled tanks and unleashed its army with machine guns on its own youth who were demanding democracy at the Tiananmen Square. That China hasn't changed; infact Hu Jintao's government has only grown bigger with more financial, political and military power.
50 years have passed since the Fourteenth Dalai Lama escaped to India after China's invasion and occupation of his Himalayan Buddhist nation, 12 years since Aung Sang Suu Kyi, Burma's long standing dissent, was put under house arrest by the military junta regime in Burma. Both the leaders - Noble laureates - run a relentless struggle for freedom and democracy through nonviolence; lead people's resistance movements. More than what they share as a deep spiritual strength, they also share China as their real adversary today.
China after occupying Tibet and other neighbouring countries is now expanding its empire to other parts of Asia. With China's backing, Burma's military regime run by Thien Swe's Junta, rules Burma with arms and money, and virtually controls Mandalay. This brings together the Tibetans and the Burmese to stand united for each other, in solidarity. On June 4th 2009, that is, the Tibetans and the Burmese will come together in solidarity with the youth of China who were killed at the Tiananmen Square twenty years ago.
Dr. Tint Swe, Burmese Member of Parliament (NLD) on the occaisaion said: "On behalf of Burmese pro-democracy movement in India, I am honored to support the just cause for democracy and rights of Tibetan people as wished by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Thrashing China's for its record of brutal clam down on protestros he said: "I strongly deplore massacre of unarmed demonstrators in any country and I salute those martyrs who have given their lives. Truth will definitely prevail everywhere!"
"The situation in Tibet is getting worse than ever before, even as china globe trots the world and hypocritically speaks of Human Rights" says Mr Urgen, President of the Delhi chapter of Tibetan Youth congress. "So long as independence of Tibet is not restored the Tibetan struggle is only going to grow as new and educated Tibetan youngsters keep joining the movement, taking up the leadership" he added.
Mr Kim, the Executive Member of Burma Centre Delhi said "China must stop supporting Burma's military regime. If not, people will never forgive and forget the way China (our big-brother) had treated and betrayed us even when democracy is restored in Burma. The first important step for China is to work for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi."
